Diako/Kurdistan

When I was a child,

I liked to watch the TV program called Grendizer. Umon, the main character, fled from his own planet, was my favorite. He fought with evil coming from outside of the earth and won; justice prevailed in the end, always.

When I was 6 years old, my cousin was killed by Arabic people. I asked my parents’ permission to see him again, because he was a friend of mine.

I saw the body washed before being placed in the coffin. I cried, but somehow believed that he would revive. Finally, he was buried and I haven’t seen him since then. My life has changed. The independence of Kurdistan has become the goal of my life. We still celebrate Nawroz* every year, lasting for more than 2500 years. In that festival, we say ‘Nawroztan prioz!*’, looking at the fire burning furiously. Lest we forget the long history of Kurdistan and the fact that so many people had been killed and never came back to our own land again. Never.

*Nawroz…Kurdish new year, 21st of March

*Nawroztan prioz…..Happy New Year.
